MTD for Income Tax is live — first quarterly update due 7 August 2026 Four cumulative updates a year, then a Final Declaration by 31 January. This kit keeps the numbers ready.

Making Tax Digital Just Got Real

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and submit quarterly updates through MTD-compatible software. Late filings earn penalty points — 4 points means a £200 fine.

Quarterly Updates Are Mandatory

Four cumulative updates a year — due 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May — then a single Final Declaration by 31 January. That's five deadlines instead of one.

Spreadsheets Alone Aren't Compliant

HMRC requires digital records in qualifying software. A spreadsheet only counts when linked through bridging software — so you need your numbers organised and ready to transfer cleanly.

VAT & Grant Tracking Creep Up

Cross the £90,000 rolling turnover threshold and you must register for VAT within 30 days. Take grants, and subsidy limits apply. Both are easy to miss without one place to track them.

Honest Answers

Does this file my taxes with HMRC?

No — and be wary of any spreadsheet that claims to. Quarterly updates must go through MTD-compatible software (QuickBooks, Xero, FreeAgent, Sage, etc.) or bridging software. This kit keeps your numbers organised, accurate and ready to transfer in minutes.

Am I actually affected by MTD?

From April 2026: yes, if your combined gross self-employment and property income on your 2024/25 return was over £50,000. The £30,000+ band follows in April 2027 and £20,000+ in April 2028 — buying early means your system is ready before you're mandated.

What are the real deadlines?

Quarterly updates are cumulative and due by the 7th of the month after each quarter: 7 August 2026, 7 November 2026, 7 February 2027 and 7 May 2027. Your Final Declaration (which replaced the planned End of Period Statement) is due 31 January 2028 for the 2026-27 year. Want them in your calendar? Download the free deadline calendar (.ics) — no signup needed.

Will I really get fined £200?

Each late submission earns a penalty point; at 4 points, quarterly filers get a £200 fine. HMRC has a first-year easement on quarterly-update points for 2026-27 — but the Final Declaration isn't covered, and late-payment penalties (rising to 10% a year) apply regardless. The kit explains all of this in plain English.

Can I reuse it next year?

Yes — the structure carries over. Save a copy per tax year and update the dates, or grab the next year's edition when it's released.
